What IS the big deal about the Keto Diet?

"Where did keto come from?"
Well, the ketogenic diet, known as keto, was originally used in medical care for epileptic children. It was originally developed in the 1920s! The diet was proven to reduce seizures in children and is still used in the medical field today. As the world adapted, so did keto, and more benefits and uses were found, such as disease prevention, weight loss, mental clarity and more!

"How does it work?"
It focuses on the process known as 'ketosis', which is the process of using fat as an energy source instead of glucose. Glucose is produced in the breaking down of carbohydrates and used as the body's primary source of energy. Therefore, through reducing the intake of carbs, keeping blood sugar and glucose levels low, the body looks for other forms of energy. This causes fat cells to broken down in the liver into ketone bodies to be used for energy instead. This is how people on the keto diet end up losing fat fast. The ketosis process can also be done through intermittent fasting, as the long periods without food cause blood sugar levels to drop and causing energy to be sourced from fat. Due to this, some people to both the keto diet and intermittent fasting together.

"But if no carbs, then what?!"
To compensate for the lack of carbs, keto focuses on adding more healthy fats and protein. The common balance for this diet is 80-90% fats, around 8% protein, and a mere near 4% for carbs! It sounds almost impossible, but healthy fats are found in a wide range of foods, such as meats, nuts, seed oils and avocado! In the last decade, thousands of recipes have been made for the keto diet, showing that a diet never has to feel like one, and food never needs to be boring! "But, is it REALLY worth eating less pizza?"
This is truly the most important question.
